Drew Barrymore is sitting in her hotel room at the Holiday Inn Suites in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is in Michigan–has been for more than two months–filming her feature directorial debut, Whip It!, a roller-derby comedy starring Juno’s Ellen Page. Ann Arbor is quite the hot spot today. The town is buzzing because Barack Obama has checked into the local Marriott en route to a parade in Detroit. Change is in the air.
Flopping on the couch with a large Coke, Drew’s a little whipped herself, swiftly flicking off the Republican convention honking from the television. She is sporting a few roller-derby bruises, but what she is prouder to sport is a one-off Marc Jacobs T-shirt that reads, in bold Jacobsean font, TIME FOR A CHANGE.
Drew is known for many things: a 28-year film career, a storied and notorious past, and being the owner of one of the sunniest dispositions this side of the sun. But she has not pledged herself publicly to a political party. “It’s the first time I’ve really admitted I’m a Democrat,” she observes. The Disney film “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” brought in roughly $29 million over the weekend to take first at the box office. The movie features conversing canines with a voice cast that includes Drew Barrymore, Cheech Marin, and Placido Domingo.Barrymore performs the voice of Chloe, a pampered pooch trying to fend for herself in Mexico. It was the largest opening for October that Disney has ever had. Not even any of the newcomers could take 2nd, which last week’s “Eagle Eye” occupied.
Taking the bottom spot at 10th was talk show host Bill Maher’s “Religulous” which took in $3.5 million. Another ideologically driven movie, David Zucker’s “An American Carol,” took 9th with $3.8 million.

Drew Barrymore looks super cute and patriotic on the November cover of Harper’s Bazaar. Being single and free to make out with whichever Gossip guy she wants must really agree with her.
Inside, the actress-producer-director-U.N. Ambassador Against Hunger makes a shocking confession. Get this: Drew is…a Democrat who supports Obama. In Hollywood, who would have thought? However, she still encourages all young people to vote, no matter the candidate, natch.
But we’re more concerned with the packaging. Happy, carefree pictures like this come off as way more inspiring than the creepy Saw-like Jessica Alba Declare Yourself PSA. Smiles over Hannibal Lecter masks!
