19/07 ‘Whip It’ Trailer
Who knows if Whip It — Drew Barrymore’s look at the empowering world of female roller derby starring Juno’s Ellen Page — will be consistently funny or just deliver a couple of direct hits.
For the moment, let’s just celebrate having Juliette Lewis back on the big screen, where she hasn’t been since 2006’s Catch and Release. I’m serious, by the way. You never know what she’s going to do, which makes seeing her alongside first-time director Barrymore, Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig, and Eve exciting.

20/08 Drew Barrymore meets Mid-Michigan fans
We told you that a movie was being shot in Birch Run Township. It’s a film called “Whip It!” that was using what used to be Kens Diner as a location that had been remade into the “Oink Joint”.Local residents spent the day at the location watching the action and looking for stars. Their wait paid off. Rob Major of Vassar was one of those lucky spectators. He sent NBC25 an email telling us about getting to meet the film’s director Drew Barrymore.
After Drew Barrymore finished shooting her final shot yesterday close to the road a group of 15 to 20 fans gathered across the road and watched as she hugged and thanked many of her crew and danced a little in celebration with some of her crew. She glanced across the street a few times as we celebrated with her. Then she seemed to be walking away when she suddenly turned around and walked across the road alone and met with us signing autographs and graciously apologizing saying she had been working very hard today. She signed my shirt and my son’s as well.
Even though this part is shot in Mid-Michigan, the movie is about a Texas girl who joins a roller derby league. The movie is based on the young adult novel Derby Girl, written by Shauna Cross. The movie is currently scheduled to be released in 2009.

I haven’t seen this officially reported anywhere, so I thought I’d pass along word that Jimmy Fallon has been cast in Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut Whip It! Fallon has been spotted by /Film sources on set of the roller derby dramedy playing “Hot Tub Johnny”, a cheesy hungover announcer who makes nasty comments to all the skaters. My sources have also spotted Andrew Wilson, brother of of Owen and Luke (fans of Wes Anderson know as “Future Man” in Bottle Rocket), who is playing a roller derby coach.
