20/08 Drew Barrymore meets Mid-Michigan fans

We told you that a movie was being shot in Birch Run Township. It’s a film called “Whip It!” that was using what used to be Kens Diner as a location that had been remade into the “Oink Joint”.Local residents spent the day at the location watching the action and looking for stars. Their wait paid off. Rob Major of Vassar was one of those lucky spectators. He sent NBC25 an email telling us about getting to meet the film’s director Drew Barrymore.

After Drew Barrymore finished shooting her final shot yesterday close to the road a group of 15 to 20 fans gathered across the road and watched as she hugged and thanked many of her crew and danced a little in celebration with some of her crew. She glanced across the street a few times as we celebrated with her. Then she seemed to be walking away when she suddenly turned around and walked across the road alone and met with us signing autographs and graciously apologizing saying she had been working very hard today. She signed my shirt and my son’s as well.

Even though this part is shot in Mid-Michigan, the movie is about a Texas girl who joins a roller derby league. The movie is based on the young adult novel Derby Girl, written by Shauna Cross. The movie is currently scheduled to be released in 2009.

I want to become an actress, if it is at all possible i would love to do more work for drew barrymore, im just a small home town hamtramck woman trying to get some work in here and there!!!! The expirence was great, everyone was asking me on the set if i knew drew berrymore pernsonally i sid no never met her in my life, why? They said the director has called your name at least 12 times and you dont even seem scard to go out there its like your use to it! I replied by saying ” I can be pretty confident in myself, thats all it takes to make or break you” then i walked away, i was nervous as ever but i didn’t let it show!!!
