Is there really a healthy cocktail? Some physicians believe that in moderation wine is good for your heart. But what about a healthy liquor for a mixed drink? Life & Style Weekly notes in a report that Drew Barrymore and Adrian Grenier love a good cocktail as much as the next person, but they don’t sweat the morning after anymore. According to the article they’re both fans of VeeV, a new liquor that contains extract of the exotic prickly pair ? ? which, studies have shown, reduces the three main components of a hangover: nausea, dry mouth, and loss of appetite. Talk about a guilt-free time!
The idea that even alcohol could be more beneficent represents a collision of broader trends, said Frank Coleman, a spokesman for the Distilled Spirits Council. As people have become more health literate and corn-syrup-phobic, labels like “green” and organic have become faddish, and the culinary shift toward farm-fresh, locally grown ingredients has crossed over from kitchen to bar. ? ? S All of these epicurean issues are coming together in a martini glass, as it were,? ? ? Mr. Coleman told the New York Times.
Luxist notes that VeeV is a 60-proof white spirit that along with acai also contains other antioxidant-containing fruits such as acerola cherry and prickly pear. The company also has a green slant. They donate $1 per bottle to green initiatives such as the Rainforest Action Network and Sambazon’s Sustainable Acai Project.
The report also notes that the company is also fine tuning their business practices making changes such as having their sales force drive Toyota Priuses and using soy ink and sustainable packaging for the product, and recycled materials in the office whenever possible. The taste is a little sweeter than a vodka and the liquor so far seems to only be available in California.
